[Quick Trip Home, Part I and GIVEAWAY WINNER!]

I snuck away for a trip home recently. Shhhhh.
And I got home on 1 tank of gas (have I told you lately how much I love my car?!). That is from Cali to Arizona... say what?!! Gosh darn it, I love that thing.

My trip into town was brought about by one of my very dearest friends in the whole wide world, Aimee, and a special bundle of joy that she is about to bring into this world. It was so amazing to see her & her sweet husband Jered and the anticipation they have for this miracle child. As friends, we have been through a lot together, including the loss of two of her babies before Carter. So, as you can imagine, this baby is VERY loved by all of us. The baby shower was amazing and I can't wait to show pictures (they were taken on the fancy camera, so that takes more time to upload than these iPhone pics... they will for sure come later).

After a few weeks of homesickness, it was great to kind of hibernate and spend time with just my family (with the exception of my girls at the shower). We had a grand 'ol time. I sure miss San Diego (Well, everything but the price of gas... say whattt??!).

1 // Me at Sprinkes. This place is totally overrated. $3.50 for a cupcake better ensure me that it a.) tastes good and b.) doesn't have multiple hairs [presumably from the employees who were not wearing hairnets] dangling from the frosting. The end.
2 // Sailing on the San Diego Bay. My dad has sailed his whole life and it is, by far, one of my favorite things to do with my family.

3 // Me and my beautiful mama :) I love her so much! 4 // My parents dog, Rocky. After getting used to Hartley's size over the past couple of months, Rocky might as well been the size of an ant. He is the cutest thing ever.

5 // Proof of how incredible my dad is... He called at 10:30 AM on a work day and said that he was on his way home to hang out with me... I think he's kissing up to me because he really wants a grandkid ;) So we went to lunch and watched boats 6 // The pier at Pacific Beach

7 // Bike riding with my mom on the Mission Bay boardwalk 8 // Me and my dad at La Jolla Cove

9 // Me and my brother, Sean (check out that beard, 'yo!) 10 // View of where Joshua and I had our wedding reception... can't believe it's been almost 5 years! Where does the time go?

11 // Devouring mud pie and Irish coffee at an Irish pub 12 // My dad

The trip was good for my soul. But it was so good to come back to my hubby and pup... I missed them like crazy. Oh, and I missed all of this open sky. Gah! Can I tell you a secret? This place is really growing on us.

[ Old School ]

Just a little glimpse of how totally awesome my parents were, and still are.
If Joshua and I are able to give our kids even half as amazing of a childhood that I had to our kiddos
one day, I'll be a happy camper.
Camping trips, sailing days, hiking memories, and lots of time together... the highs and lows of life and all of the good in-between... It was sweet.
Love them, and my little bro, of course, too.

P.S. And yes, in these pictures I am sailing with pen & paper. Oh, how Heather of me :)

[ Assumptions vs Reality ]

"Assumptions are the termites of relationships."
- Rev Run Wisdom

I recently read this re-tweet (yes, re-tweet-- I do not follow Rev Run, bwahaha) from a certain celebrity I follow on Twitter (I know, I know, I stalk those celebs). It really struck a chord with me because I do this way too much.

I assume something about a person or a situation, I over-think it, and it eats me up.
Half of the time, I don't even know all of the information

My darling husband will be the first to tell you that probably one of my biggest faults is that I over-analyze things. My brain is constantly thinking, turning, and brainstorming... it's super hard for me to not cut up a problem on the operating room table in my mind, dissect it every possible way, and dissect it some more. Is it a woman thing? It's a problem.

[credit]
Jesus is our perfect example of one who assumed the best of others. He was a man who thought the best of people, who showed grace freely, and who loved deeply.

"Summing it all up, friends, I'd say you'll do best by filling your minds and meditating on things true, noble, reputable, authentic, compelling, gracious— the best, not the worst; the beautiful, not the ugly; things to praise, not things to curse. Put into practice what you learned from me, what you heard and saw and realized. Do that, and God, who makes everything work together, will work you into his most excellent harmonies." - Philippians 4:8 (MSG)

Everyone, me included: Let's assume the best of others. And as my amazing mom would say, "What's the truth of the situation?" :) On blogs, on Facebook, wherever. Let's stop eating ourselves up by comparing ourselves to what we think is going in someones life and comparing it to our own. We don't know what other people are going through. What's that quote... "Be kind for everyone is fighting a battle"? Battle indeed. Let's be kind, show the love of Jesus, communicate graciously, think the best of others, and forgive much. I am guilty.

[ There's Always A First Time! GIVEAWAY!! ]

Happy Monday!

[This picture is completely irrelevant to this post, but I was looking at old pictures and saw it... and it made me happy. This is us, on the right, with a group of friends from our young married's Bible study back in San Diego, hanging out at a 50's diner (thus, the hat on Steven). At this time of year. But in 2009. I miss these people! And note: I was really blonde, and no, that is not a real Louis Vuitton... my old boss went to Canal Street in NYC ;) ...]

[ Pomegranate Surgery ]

Ok, so no joke... I just learned how to cut up a pomegranate like 9 months ago. I have always loved the thing, but have never known how to dissect one and consume its tastiness. I have fond memories of babysitting for an adorable little family who had their own grove of tasty pomegranate trees. The kids and I would pick the pomegranates and sit on the driveway and devour them. But we just cracked them on the concrete and broke them apart with our bare hands like a whole bunch of starved, hungry carnivals... we didn't go inside and cut them up like normal, civilized humans. I distinctly remember the juice dripping all over us, trickling all over the concrete driveway, and staining all our clothes and fingers. Oh, maybe that's what got me fired from those babysitting jobs (that's another story)?! Good times!

I am constantly on the lookout for great alternatives to candy because I love, love, love sour/sweet candy like Sour Patch Kids, sour straws, and sour gummy worms. They are horrible for my immune system and totally destroy my mouth... but they are oh so good! Pomegranate seeds, and fruit in general, help give me a little afternoon, scrumptious snack while satisfying that sugar craving and yet staying healthy at the same time :)

Do you know how to cut up a pomegranate? Probably.
But if you're like me, and are intimidated by the thing, here's some quick tricks.
So without further ado... here are my pomegranate cutting up techniques, ta da!:

Step 1: Stare at your pretty pomegranates

Step 2: Cut your pomegranates into fourths

Step 3: Fill up bowl with cold water, and place the pomegranate segments into it

Step 4: Let pieces soak for 10 minutes. Return to bowl, and take each individual piece and tear the pomegranate seeds off of the skin. The seeds should detached easily, and let them sink to the bottom. The skin will remain floating on the surface of the water. When all of the seeds have been extracted, reach into the bowl and scoop out all of the skin and throw away or put into your compost bin (all you green peeps!).

Step 5: Pour seeds into strainer

Step 6: Rinse seeds with water. Try to get any remaining skin off of the seeds.

Step 7: Enjoy! And this pictures reminds me that I need to go take a shower... Toodles!

xoxo,
Heather

[ Crown Molding Obsession ]

I'm just a tad obsessed with crown molding-- it has the ability to make any room look instantly chic and elegant. I love the contrast between the gorgeous wall colors and the crisp white molding in these lovely family rooms... So beautiful!

I think I could look at home decor pictures all day long on Pinterest
What's your favorite room in your home? :)

... LIFE IN THE 505 ...

Hi there! I'm Katie, author of "Life in the 505," an online scrapbook of my family's life in the Land of Enchantment. I blog in an effort to document the little things in life that make it so great-- like my baby girl's 6 month birthday, the anniversary where the hubs and I exchanged the exact same card, and how excited we are for fall to come to our neck of the woods. I have fallen in love with the world of blogging and love the opportunity it has given me to connect with others in what my hubby calls the "blogosphere." I hope you stop by my blog-- I would love to get to know you!

Hi! I'm Alana and I blog about my newlywed adventures with my airman
at Mrs. Alana's Miscellany. He's the dork to my nerd, and I gush about
him often. I don't sound very Southern until I let a "y'all" or "Roll
Tide" slip, but then again my sweet tea addiction will probably give
me away. I'm also a teacher, and a brand-new Etsy shop owner! I hope
you'll drop by my blog and say hello! :)

Hi! My name is Kelli and I blog over at dailypolkadots!
My blog is a tiny piece of the world wide web where I enjoy sharing daily about my life…my relationship with Jesus, my wonderful (hot) boyfriend, photography, my friends & family, everything polkadots, random thoughts, and many other things I love or don’t J. I am 22, I still get Teen Vogue in the mail, I can pop my gum really loud, I wish I could wear sweatpants every day of my life, I like to be to class at least a half our early, I get really upset when people where summer clothes while it is still cold outside, and I could not wink to save my life. I try my hardest every day to love well, be patient, and enjoy life. I am new to this incredibly vast world of blogging so I would love if you stopped by and followed me through this crazy, awesome, love filled life I am living!

... THE SMALL TOWN MOM
...

Hello everyone! My name is Tara and I blog over at The Small Town Mom and am also the owner of June. The Shop. I am currently living in a small town just south of the Twin Cities, Minnesota with my husband of 3 years and my 20 month old daughter. And let me tell you, it is fun! I've always pictures myself as a stay-at-home-mom and although everyday isn't easy, I wouldn't trade it for anything!

I am inspired by so many things, it can be the gathering of a dress, or the pop of color on a wall! The support of my family and friends is always an inspiration to me and I am always looking for inspiration in the things that surround me. My go to place is the ever addicting, Pinterest!

When I'm not singing off key toddler songs or hanging out with The Hubs, I love to craft. I'm a fan of anything DIY and enjoy creating for others! And when the weather is right (I'm one who pretty much hibernates during the winter months) I also love to sight see around Minnesota!
