Baby's First Picture

Tuesday, January 31, 2012

... yesterday was one of the most beautiful days of my life.

We heard our baby's heartbeat for the first time. And we finally saw his or her little fingers & toes, head, and body via sonogram.

There really are no words for how amazing it was!

Another little update... I wanted to wait until after our appointment to say this, but... While we were up in Phoenix for "The Civil Wars" concert last Thursday night, I felt the baby move.

We were waiting for the show to begin, and loud music was streaming through the speakers, and I felt little butterfly flutters. I looked at Joshua with a big smile and told him that "baby likes music."

Little, beautiful butterfly-like movements have been occurring daily since the concert. It's baby squirming around in there. And it's lovely.

After 13 weeks of waiting for an ultrasound, when I felt that movement, it was almost like God's sign to me that everything was okay. It was like He was saying to me, "Heather, be patient with me, I've got this. Baby is growing strong and healthy under My care and guidance. Trust me."

There was something about seeing our little one that made this all finally feel real.

It solidified that we are no longer two, but three.

I've never seen Joshua beam like that.
I want to relive that moment over and over again.

Sharing my story in small pieces at a time. Blogging has allowed me to find and use my voice for the first time in my life -- and I don't mean singing (which is what I do for a living) -- but I mean my authentic voice, the me underneath everything that I hide behind.

My favourite blogs of the moment are The Good Women Project, Jamie the Very Worst Missionary, Modern Reject, Casey Wiegand, and of course Finding Beauty in the Ordinary :) I also love CJane and Pioneer Woman for their humour, and The Daybook and Rockstar Diaries for fashion.

A recovering over-achiever's blog journey about identity, music, love, marriage, and going against the grain to follow Jesus. I'm Ali - a freelance musician - and I started Not Hip Enough To Blog back in 2009 because of an overwhelming desire to just do away with what our media/culture tells us is hip, and go after the real, legacy-leaving good stuff instead. I do a weekly column called "What's Hip Wednesday" featuring interviews with people who are doing some things that aren't necessarily considered hip within our narcissistic, materialistic culture, but who are hip in living out the kingdom in authentic and inspiring ways (eg. Living Simply, Redeeming Marriage After An Affair, Living in Community, Pursuing Your Gifts Instead of Stability).

Some Videos For Your Monday (You Will Laugh So Hard You Will Cry)

Sunday, January 29, 2012

Hi everyone!

How was your weekend?! Hope it was fabulous!!

I think I'm still recovering from our trip back home to San Diego! I've been super unmotivated and tired lately. Plus, having a little one cookin' in me is a lot of work, too ;)

We also drove up to Phoenix to see "The Civil Wars" in concert on Thursday night! We originally were going to see them back in November during our 5th wedding anniversary getaway, but Joy came down with laryngitis and they had to postpone their show. They put on an incredible concert-- I'm still reliving it! But the 5 hours of standing on my feet (with no potty breaks or food to eat in my purse) was LONG! Pics coming soon-- we were 4th row back!

So until I can get with the program and unload some pictures, I will leave you with this....

So, the other night, I was looking for recipes on sweet Ruthie Hart's blog (which is fabulous, by the way!!) and came across her post "Sh*T [Insert Noun] Say." The first video I saw in this "series" was this one... and then I saw these!

..."Sh*T Mommy Bloggers Say"-- seriously?!! Oh. My. Gosh. I almost peed my pants laughing so hard! Thanks, Ruthie!!

That compelled me to look up more videos on YouTube and found this "Sh*T Mom Blogger Husbands Say"-- HAHAHA!!!! Sooooo hysterial. I am still dying.

If you are a blogger, you GET THIS. We have our own lingo. And we love it.

Since my hubby does freelance photography anyway, I will admit that he totally gets it and is often saying, "Hey babe, do you want me to take photos of this for your blog?" :) I appreciate all of his support and his patience with all of my crazy blogger lingo. Love that man! Remember that time we pretended we were food critics? Oh, blogging is so much fun :)

Do you relate to these videos? Would your spouse or boyfriend say some of the same things?!!!!

Quinoa Edamame Salad

Friday, January 27, 2012

I am loving all sorts of healthy foods right now. Striving to eat healthy should be a consistent goal for my overall health, but eating for two definitely makes me think about every single thing that I put in my body. All I crave lately is fruit and clean food. Although I am very sure that I will start getting a sweet tooth here before I know it! :)

So the other day, I spent way too much money at the grocery store just drooling over produce and throwing it in my cart. Note to self: Never grocery shop while starving, let alone pregnant. It's a bad, I mean, bad combination.

While there, I got everything for this recipe and would highly recommend it!
It provides great protein with the quinoa and edamame and was filled with great flavor.

Enjoy and happy weekend!!

Do you have any fun weekend plans!?

2 ears sweet corn (I just used a can of unsweetened corn)
1 small red onion, finely diced
1 red bell pepper, cut in small dice
1/2 cup thinly sliced celery, from the tender inner stalks
4 or 5 radishes, sliced
1/2 cup fresh or thawed frozen edamame
2 ounces feta, cut in small dice (about 1/2 cup, optional)
1 jalapeño or serrano chile, minced
1/2 cup chopped cilantro

For the dressing...

2 tablespoons fresh lime juice
1 garlic clove (more to taste), finely minced or pureed
1/4 cup extra virgin olive oil
Salt to taste

Cut the corn kernels away from the cobs. Discard the cobs (or use for stock), and place the kernels in a steamer above 1 inch of boiling water. Cover and steam for four minutes. Remove from the heat, rinse with cold water and drain.

While I steamed the corn, I threw my quinoa in my rice cooker... it really is the best invention ever!

And then I chopped up all of the ingredients....
Soak the onion in cold water to cover for five minutes. Drain, rinse and drain on paper towels.
Combine all the salad ingredients in a large bowl. Whisk together the dressing ingredients and toss with the salad. Serve and enjoy!!

rves four to six.

WIWW // Oh Baby!

Tuesday, January 24, 2012

It's true. I kind of belly-exploded overnight. Joshua and I were lying in bed the other night talking about what we thought would happen next on "Revenge" when he decided to reach over and feel my belly. The next thing out of his mouth was something like, "Darrrrrn babe..." and that's when I told him not to mess with me or else.

But in all seriousness, he's loving this whole pregnancy thing and my favorite thing so far is when we pray at night and he holds my belly and prays for "our little Peanut." I don't think there's anything sexier than that... Hubba!

I had to make sure to do lots of belly holding and rubs at church on Sunday while we were back home in San Diego in case anyone that I hadn't seen in awhile saw me and thought to themselves, "Oh wow, that Heather girl is really packing on the belly pounds." :)

These pics were actually taken last Thursday, when I hit 12 weeks. So I'm actually almost to 13 weeks. We have our next appointment on the 31st and I hope we get to hear the heartbeat. They say it sounds like galloping horses. I have a feeling this will beat the melody of all of the galloping horses' heart beats in the world.

Entire wardrobe is Target (makes me think of you, Erin, ha!)!

This Is Your Life

Sorry to keep it short today but we just got home from a whirlwind, 4 day trip back home to visit family in San Diego. My mother-in-law was SO surprised for her retirement party and we had a blast spending time with family, friends, and enjoying a little bit of time at the beach (even though it was sprinkling). I got a LOT of belly rubs and I think that I have definitely "popped" in the past 5 days! Crazy to think that our little peanut is now the size of a peach! :)

Happy Tuesday, friends, be blessed today with this encouragement! Sometimes I need to break this out and remind myself of these truths.

Life is short. Live your dream, and wear your passion!

What does this look like for you?! :)

Over Coffee, Part II

Thursday, January 19, 2012

If we were to have coffee together this morning...

I would hope that it was at someplace unique. I'm really loving these little local coffee shops these days. I love Starbucks and worked there for a few years, but I love the taste of some good, local coffee like this place
I would admit that I'm about 2 seconds away from unfollowing people on Pinterest that only repin pictures of girls with rock hard bodies. If that is inspiring you, awesome. The rest of us don't want to see it over and over again. It's depressing. And remember, it's photoshopped.

I would tell you that I really miss wine and beer. I wasn't a big drinker pre-pregnancy, but I did enjoy the occasional glass of red wine or beer with a burger. I try not to day dream about those things now because I still have 28 more weeks to go and then there's nursing...

I would honestly admit that sometimes it's a struggle knowing that people in my personal life read my blog on a consistent basis and have an inside look into my life but yet never comment or mention it to me. It makes me want to delete this thing sometimes.

I would tell you that I have absolutely no idea what's going on in the world other than what I see on my CNN and Fox News apps on my iPhone. That's the beautiful thing about not having cable.

I would tell you that I'm loving this verse right now, in this translation...

John 16:21-23

The Message (MSG)

"When a woman gives birth, she has a hard time, there's no getting around it. But when the baby is born, there is joy in the birth. This new life in the world wipes out memory of the pain. The sadness you have right now is similar to that pain, but the coming joy is also similar. When I see you again, you'll be full of joy, and it will be a joy no one can rob from you. You'll no longer be so full of questions."

I would communicate to you that I am absolutely excited and yet incredibly petrified to be a mother. It's all I've ever wanted to be, but knowing that I am 100% responsible for human life is a beautifully overwhelming thought sometimes.

I would tell you that I'm dying to watch this new movie called "Forks Over Knives"-- a film about healthy food and creating a healthy lifestyle. I'm sure it will be pretty hard to watch while I'm in the middle of satisfying a pregnancy craving of Doritos, but whatever.

I would admit that I often daydream about the moment that I see my husband hold our baby for the first time. I am so overwhelmed by the thought of seeing him become a dad and I know he will be just magical.

I would tell you that while at Target the other day, I had an overwhelming urge to buy Valentine's Day cupcake mix with strawberry icing and heart sprinkles. I ate 4 of them yesterday and they were worth every lap around the lake that I had walked that morning.

I would tell you that I'm completely amazed by the fact of how much stronger, confident and more resilient I am as a woman now that I moved away from my childhood "bubble." I think it's an important part of life: to learn to change, adapt and grow in a new environment. It's amazing what it does to you!

I would tell you that I think that Jessica Alba totally stole the show at the Golden Globe Awards this year. I don't have cable, remember, but I do have the People app on my phone. And that girl is just so darn beautiful it is disgusting.

I will admit that it is already getting hard to touch my toes and get in and out of the car. And that my toilet paper supply is running out awfully fast these days. You didn't want to know that. But when you're pregnant, you pee a lot. Just keepin' it real.

I would tell you that I am currently reading "The Picture of Dorian Gray" (can not put it down) by Oscar Wilde, "Reshaping It All: Motivation for Physical & Spiritual Fitness" by Candace Cameron Bure (yay, DJ from Full House) and "The Power of A Praying Wife" by Stormie Omartian. All are must reads.

I would tell you that my favorite new tv show is "Revenge" and that you are completely missing out if you are wasting your life watching "Glee" instead.

I would tell you that my mom has her Master's Degree in Nutrition and is incredibly smart about all things healthy. But I loved that she never shoved it down our throats growing up. She was always the mom that said, "Deny yourself anything and you'll eat it in excess" and I love that about her!

I would admit that we are pretty much obsessed with a certain name for a baby girl and love that it's unique but not too weird. We just hope no one in our family or our friends steal it before we do.

I would tell you that each and every comment that is ever posted goes straight to my email inbox and is seen by me with a big smile. They do not go unnoticed. I love them; thank you.

And I would also tell you that I think it's so cool that in the last "Over Coffee" post that I wrote back in November, I said that we were really ready to start a family. And when I actually wrote that, my baby was already 3 weeks old... never doubt what God is capable of doing in your life!

Part I of Over Coffee, here

What would you tell me?!!

Some Of My Favorite Nursery Designs and Baby Items

Wednesday, January 18, 2012

I've been so overwhelmed with appreciation over the past couple of weeks as emails and comments have flowed in from kind readers like you that are just as excited as us about our little peanut! It's a really humbling feeling to receive so much love like this! We feel so blessed. It's so amazing to see how loved our little one is already!

Now that I'm almost out of the first trimester (tomorrow!), I'm finally starting to feel normal after weeks and weeks of constant nausea. It's such a wild thing to feel your body go through such a complete transformation. Other than peeing the average of 6 times in the middle of the night, and occasional heartburn, right now my biggest pregnancy symptom has been an immense amount of pain in my hips. They are getting ready for labor, holla! I'm looking into some prenatal yoga studios around here and am planning on signing up when we get home from our trip to San Diego this weekend-- hoping that will help!

(I promise I will have better quality pics moving forward!)

I don't think I've mentioned it here yet, but we are not finding out the sex of the baby! So hearing it's first cry and hearing "It's a BOY!" or "It's a GIRL" is going to be a crazy, wild, amazing experience for us. Of course, this is testing my control issues and I know it will be hard to plan some things, but overall, I'm actually really excited about waiting. No one on either side of our families has ever found out so we are trying to keep that tradition going.

The other thing I'm discovering when I look at baby items at Babies 'R Us, Gymboree and Target is that I don't like a lot of stuff out there! Eeeek! I'm not really into big, bright colors. I prefer a more neutral approach anyway, so I know this will work in my favor with planning a gender-neutral nursery. I have a feeling I will find most of the stuff for the nursery off of Etsy. Both Joshua and I love the idea of gray walls which works for either a boy or a girl. And then when the baby comes, we can gradually incorporate more feminine or masculine aspects to it.

Here are some of my favorite "wanted" baby items right now!

I've been obsessed with that Petunia Pickle Bottom diaper bag since I've seen it on a few popular bloggers' pages... EEEEP! So gorgeous.

Sooooo.... We'd love to know what YOU think we're having! A boy or a girl? Click on the poll up on the top left and let us know! :)

Tell us a little about your blog!

Hi, I'm Shakti Dove! I am a wife, student, thrifted treasure hunter, artist, sister, and, most importantly, a child of God. I am also a lover of laughter and glitter. I blog about all such things and other random bits.

What's your favorite aspect of blogging?

That is a visual journal

What's your favorite blog of the moment?

It's so hard to pick just one, but I really love West Coast Creative

What inspires you?

I am inspired by color and small things.
Something as simple as an interesting twig or a bit of broken glass will prompt a project.

Tell us a little about your blog!

Adventures in Flip Flops is a lifestyle blog chronicling my desire to experience everything. And by everything I mean books, food, traveling, and adrenaline rushes. And not necessarily in that order. I'd love to share my journey with you, so please drop in and say howdy!
What's your favorite aspect of blogging?

Making connections and recording my history. It's so fun to look back and see where I was years ago, how my focus has changed (how my writing has changed), and use that to plan what I want to do in the future. And how gratifying is it to make friends online (that are not weird, creepy basement dwellers) and to see them in real-life? How awesome that we can support and inspire each other from so far away?

What's your favorite blog of the moment?

Besides the obvious (ahem, this one!), I luuurve Modge, The Bloggess, Bookriot, and Meg

What inspires you?

Books. Nature. Climbing. Adventure. Traveling. Great Coffee. Friends. Judaism. Wonderful food (both eating and cooking). The youth I work with. My Bucket List. My family.     You can find a list of my goals here, but in general they are read more, save more, have more adventures and make a difference.

Tell us a little about your blog!

My journey thru life with family, friends and a little dog named Tucker. My blog is a little bit of this and that.  I have always been a stay at home mom and have two teenage daughters who don't really need me as much. Alot of changes came to me in 2011 - My Mom passed away in September and my husband took a job many states away.  Come over and say HI!

What's your favorite aspect of blogging?

I have two things: meeting the wonderful people that blog and to get things off my chest. When I blog about something that someone else can relate to and they email me about it and say they in the same boat or feel the same way. I feel I have connected with that person.  Also, about 3/4 times this has happened where someone will email me and say they have never left a comment before but wanted to know they enjoyed my post.

What's your favorite blog of the moment?

Summer's Story

What inspires you?
My children- I want to be the best mother I can be and show them by example.

Poofy Cheeks started as a way for me to 'escape' my daily diaper duties as a mom for just a few minutes each day. It has turned into so much more! I share crafts, recipes, and bits of real life on my new series 'Let's Do Lunch'.

What's your favorite aspect of blogging?
My favorite aspect of blogging is getting to know and form wonderful friendships/relationships with others!

What's your favorite blog of the moment?

Right now I am digging on Sunshine & Carousels, The Wiegand's, and of course one of my long time fave's is Enjoying the Small Things.

What inspires you?

Most importantly I am inspired by my family, but I am also SO inspired by other members of the blogging community.

Tell us a little about your blog!

I'm a country girl that loves to wear flannel, bargain-hunt, say "dag-gummit", eat meat and potatoes, and get crafty with my bare hands. I create furniture and home decor that looks "rustic" and love to find treasures at garage sales, thrift stores, consignment stores, auctions, even items tossed to the side of the road.

What's your favorite aspect of blogging?

It allows me to connect with people who share the same passion and interests that I probably would have never met otherwise. There are so many gifted people in the blogging world and I love how willing they all are to share their God-given talents and secrets!

What's your favorite blog of the moment? - to say this woman is talented is an understatement. I get a lot of my inspiration from her work and she has great decorating tips and tricks!

What inspires you?

I love the story of how my grandmother found some old apple crates in a junkyard in the summer of 1949 and proudly turned them into a cupboard for dishes, complete with curtains. Her and my mother inspire me to continue our joy of turning trash into treasure and to glorify God with the talents He gave us!

Vulnerability // Transparency // Honesty // And All That

Yesterday I had that strong urge to get out of the house and go shopping. That never happens. Evidence that a growing human has overtaken my body.

After I survived Target on a holiday and managed to get an Icee from the food court (preggo craving #4, can't remember the last time I had one... maybe I was 10? Man, it was as good as I remember!), I headed to my car and picked up my phone to call Meredith.

Meredith being the one-and-only Meredith Espey, of Everything Espey; as in, all things awesomeness.

Meredith is a gem. She's incredibly real/honest/transparent, funny, and down-to-earth. Those qualities right there are some of my favorite attributes of a friend.

I could go on and on about Meredith, but I'll just leave it at this: we've only known one another since August 2011. When we talk on the phone, we talk for hours. And when I found out I was pregnant, she was one of the first that I told, and she was the one that told me I needed to wait to tell the hubby :)

It boggles my mind how I know someone so intimately that I have never even met in "real life." (I would like to add that, although I mention how much I love my blog friends, I am not a total loser who has no "real life" friends :) Hahaha!)

I attribute the depth of friendship with Meredith so fast and so soon because she's transparent. Real. Honest. And genuine. And in-between all of that, she has some pretty darn funny one-liners.

This is all to say that my conversation with her (which got me so inspired that I made a whole batch of Valentine's Day cupcakes and ate 2 of them, gasp!) was, and always is, so refreshingly honest.

Talking with her always brings me back to realize that this (transparency) is a quality that you must posses in order to have true intimacy with God, your spouse, or your friends.

You have to get real to get going.

are unreasonable, illogical, and self-centered. Love them anyway.

If you do good, people may accuse you of selfish motives. Do good anyway.

If you are successful, you may win false friends and true enemies. Succeed anyway.

The good you do today may be forgotten tomorrow. Do good anyway.

Honesty and transparency make you vulnerable. Be honest and transparent anyway.

What you spend years building may be destroyed overnight. Build anyway.

People who really want help may attack you if you help them. Help them anyway.

Give the world the best you have and you may get hurt. Give the world your best anyway."

-- Mother Theresa

Are you transparent in your relationships? Or do you find it hard to get real? Take it up a notch and get vulnerable... your honesty just might impact another person who just might say, "You too?!"
